I am a bit obsessed with brunch. In fact, many evenings when I’m cooking just for me, I make breakfast for dinner. Am I the only one?! After a number of recommendations from fellow Portland foodies, I forced my family to brave our first snow-day in Portland (YAY!!!) and dine out at Gravy on Mississippi Ave.
You can spot this quaint little eatery by the line of hungry patrons standing outside. While you can expect a bit of a wait, I promise it is worth every minute. The menu has a great variety of scrambles, breakfast sandwiches and decadent french toast. We started the morning with rich, creamy hot chocolates to warm our stomachs after standing in the cold. Because we were having so much trouble selecting one item on the menu to try, we decided to go family style. Oh how Asian of us. We ordered five dishes plus a bowl of oatmeal for 7 people. We tried: the Oatmeal Brûlée with mixed berries, the Greco Scramble of sun-dried tomato, mushrooms, spinach, and swiss cheese, the French Toast, the Banana and Chocolate Chip pancakes, Gravy’s Monte Cristo and the Salmon Hash and eggs. Everything was delicious. Our favorites were definitely their signature Oatmeal Brûlée, the French Toast and the Monte Cristo. The oatmeal is glazed with a crunchy layer of brûlée adding a sweetness to the traditional oatmeal dish. The egg, ham and cheese melted on top of fluffy challah bread made this one of the best Monte Cristos I’ve ever had. The only disappointment of the morning was the salmon hash. I had high hopes for it since many of friends had recommended that specific dish but I found the dish to be quite dry and the salmon to be overcooked. I am much more partial to the salmon hash at Mother’s Bistro.
Between the 7 of us (none of whom are huge eaters…okay, except for yours truly) we had plenty of leftovers. 5 dishes would have sufficed! The service was great and we will definitely be returning customers! I would recommend either going early on the weekend or going with a small party.
The restaurant is located at 3957 North Mississippi Avenue, Portland, OR 97227 and open seven days a week from 7:30 – 3:00pm.
Anyone else been to Gravy? What other dishes are must haves for next time?
